 Music Scholarships in Durham 

 

There are many scholarships available for musicians across the University, some adminsitered pre-arrival, some by individual colleges, some for performers, for organists, for societies, for personal development.. Follow the links below to find out more.

Awarded pre-arrival to Durham to prospective students
 

Vice Chancellor Scholarships for Music

  • Administered pre-arrival to Durham University

  • High performance individuals who will be active members of the musical environment.

  • Music Scholars at Durham University will benefit from belonging to the vibrant musical community plus £2,000 per annum towards general living costs and the costs of participating in your chosen musical activities.

 

Barker Music Scholarship

  • Administered pre-arrival to Durham University to one individual

  • £3000 per year

  • For a student who displays excellence and leadership in music. The scholarship recipient may or may not choose to formally read Music, although he or she will be expected to actively participate in the musical life of the University, representing Durham in local, regional, national and/or international performances. The Barker Scholarship is annually renewable for the duration of the student's undergraduate studies at Durham, subject to satisfactory performance in music, academic progress and general good conduct. The Scholarship is due to be offered again to students commencing their studies with the University in October 2015.

 

Choral Scholarships with the Cathedral

  • Worth a minimum of £1,540 in the first year, £1,840 in the second year and Â£2,150 for third and subsequent years.

  • Choral Scholarships may be held in conjunction with other local authority or other similar awards.

  • As a Choral Scholar, you will be required to play an active part in the musical life of Durham Cathedral.

Choral Scholarships are open to prospective students hoping to start their studies at Durham University and to current students of the University.

Brileen Award

  • £300

  • First year female student who is studying Honours Music.

  • Administered through Hatfield Trust

  • The aim of the award is to enable the student to extend those music activities which will support academic work in the Music Honours programme.

 

Eve Myra Kisch

  • proficiency in Music to a student in the School of Music

  • all years

  • £100

 

Rosalind Dickinson Prize

  • Awarded on the recommendations of the Board of Examiners in Music to the outstanding candidate in the Final Honours Examination in Music

  • £50

 

Michael James Scholarship

  • awarded annually on the results of preliminary honours - may be split

  • £150

 

Beecham Scholarship

  • 1st year performance prize with an auditioned application

  • £1000 over three years

 

University Awarded (all current students)
 

Arts Management Grants

  • Administered through Durham University/Undergraduate scholarships each term

  • Support for extra-curricular activity

  • Provide support to individual students and groups of students who wish to undertake ventures in any of the branches of the arts, for example theatrical and musical productions, photographic exhibitions, arts magazines etc.

 

PwC Sponsorship

  • Administered through DUMS for music ensemble events

  • Must be a society ratified to DUMS

  • Nine sponsorships per year; ~ £300 per scholarship

 

Chris Higgins Music Bursaries

  • Administered jointly between Experience Durham and the Music Department.

  • Five scholarships per year; £300-£400 per grant

  • Rubric: scholarships to be spent on diploma or higher-level tuition

 

Chapel Choir scholarships (Current students)
 

University College

  • Choral Scholarships: eight scholarships awarded by audition: £150 each

  • Organ Scholarships: Two awarded £150 - £200 (depending on the split of responsibilities in each year)

  • Director of Music Scholarship: £300

 

Hatfield College

  • Hatfield Choral Scholarships: Eight choral scholarships, to the value of £100 each and funded by the Hatfield Trust, Hatfield SCR, will be awarded annually after interviews/by the College Chaplain and the Director of Music of the Hatfield Chapel Choir.

  • Hatfield Organ Scholarships (Director of Music): To the value of £250, awarded annually after interviews/auditions by the College Chaplain.

  • Hatfield Organ Scholarships (Organ Scholar): To the value of £200, awarded annually after interviews/auditions by the College Chaplain

  • Matthew Fantom Organ Scholarship: An annual scholarship (which may be split between more than one applicant) to the value of up to £480, awarded to a member or members of Hatfield College to pay for organ lessons. Preference will be given to applicants who are at the relatively early stages of learning to play the organ and who would not be ready to apply for the College Organ Scholarship.

 

College of St Hild and St Bede

  • Choral Scholarships: Eight scholarships to the value of £125 will be awarded annually (two per part SATB). These can only be awarded to members of the College of St Hild and St Bede.

  • The St. Hild & St. Bede Trust: A diocesan Trust, independent of College that historically provides funding for the College Chaplain; annual Theology Scholarships, Organ Scholarships and a Director and Assistant Director of Music, the value of which are listed below. NB, these can only be awarded to members of the College of St Hild and St Bede.

  • Director of Music: £1000

  • Assistant Director of Music: £300

  • Senior Organ Scholarships:  Â£500

  • Junior Organ Scholarship: £300

 

St John’s College

  • The Wallis Organ Scholarship: Exists to recognize ability and secure the services of an organist for the College Chapel. The typical grant is £400 (including money for organ lessons). It is awarded at the discretion of the Principal of St John's College to a student at the College

  • The Junior Organ Scholarship: £300

  • Sixteen choral scholarships: Four scholarships are available for each voice part, with a stipend of £300.

 

St Chad’s College

  • Senior Organ Scholarship: Awarded annually after trials conducted by the Director of Music and the Organist of Durham Cathedral. The Senior Organ Scholar receives a number of private lessons with one of the Cathedral Organists as well as a stipend (£300).

  • Two Junior Organ Scholarships: Awarded annually after trials conducted by the Director of Music and the Organist of Durham Cathedral. The Organ Scholars receive a number of private lessons with one of the Cathedral Organists as well as a stipend (£300).

  • Choral Scholarships: Up to twelve scholarships are awarded annually after trials conducted by the Director of Music and the Organist of Durham Cathedral. The Choral Scholars receive a stipend which they can use towards private singing lessons (£225).

 

St Cuthbert’s Society

  • Director of Music: Â£250 pa

  • Assistant Director of Music: Â£200 pa

  • Soprano Scholar: £100 pa

  • Alto Scholar: £100 pa

  • Tenor Scholar: £100 pa

  • Bass Scholar: £100 pa

 

Grey College

  • Soprano Scholar: £150 pa

  • Alto Scholar: £150 pa

  • Tenor Scholar: £150 pa

  • Bass Scholar: £150 pa

 

St Mary’s College

  • Director of Music: £500 pa

  • Assistant Director of Music: £300 pa

  • Soprano Scholar: £150 pa

  • Alto Scholar: £150 pa

  • Tenor Scholar: £150 pa

  • Bass Scholar: £150 pa

 

Catholic Chaplaincy Scholarships

  • Choral Scholarships: up to four scholarships to the value of £100 will be awarded annually on audition/interview with the Chaplain and Director of Music.

  • Organ Scholarships/Directorships of Music: up two scholarships of between £150 and £250 (depending on division of responsibilities) will be awarded annually on audition/interview.
