  Music ensembles   

There are over 60 musical groups within the University within Music Durham, the College music environment and some within the Students' Union. Information on college chapel choirs can be found on the next page and Music Durham's leading ensembles are listed below.
 Orchestras  

There are three main orchestras in Durham, offering a wide range of abilities and styles for people to get involved at any level.

 

Orchestral society - comprised of the University Symphony orchestra and the University Chamber orchestra, and is made up of some of the most talented orchestral musicians in the University. 
 

Palatinate Orchestra - DUPO is one of Durham’s leading Symphony orchestras, priding itself on its inclusive nature and high standard of performance

 

 

 

 Bands  

Our two leading, and completely unaudtioned bands in Durham bring high quality banding open for anyone.

 

Brass Band - Durham University's friendly and non-auditioned brass band, holding regular concerts and taking part in events around the country.

 

Concert Band - The Durham University Concert Band is a non-auditioned wind band, putting on termly concerts and events for the local community. The band’s repertoire is vast and varied – last year our music included film scores, Broadway musicals, contemporary pieces, full concert band suites and classical works. 

 

 Choirs  

In addition to the very active chapel choir scene, there are a number of choirs in Durham to get involved with. From A Cappella to Choral societies - there is something available for everyone. The two leading Music Durham choirs are listed below, more can be found at the bottom of the page.

 

Northern Lights - Durham University A Capella Choir is a friendly, auditioned choir singing a range of music from classic close harmony to daring dubstep and everything in between, often arranging its own music from scratch.

 

Chamber Choir - Durham University Chamber Choir is formed of the 20 best choral singers in Durham and is the city’s leading student choir. Working most unaccompanied, it embraces opportunities to sing the most technically challenging music.

 

 

 

 

 Dramatic groups 

Our friends in DST - Durham Student Theatre - have two very exceptional groups who join the gap with Music and Theatre.

 

DULOG - Durham University Light Opera Group is the main musical theatre group. They stage five shows a year, ranging from Gilbert & Sullivan to modern Broadway, including one at the Edinburgh Fringe. The highlight of the DULOG calendar is in late January: the annual show at the professional Gala Theatre.

 

DOE - DOE stages three auditioned operatic productions suitable for young voices each year with our performances housed in a variety of beautiful locations around Durham.
 

Students' Union Societies

Big Band - Durham University Big Band is an award-winning big band comprising some of Durham’s finest musicians, and plays a range of traditional and contemporary big band music.

 

African Singing and Drumming Society -  aims to provide students with the opportunity to learn songs and drumming patterns from Central, Eastern and Southern Africa, and experience the diverse languages of these regions.

 

Recorder Group - Durham University Recorder Group is a small group of players which meets regularly to play a range of chamber music, from Bach and Telemann to Britten and Bullard.

 

Society of Change Ringers - We welcomes ringers of all standards, including complete beginners. It practices weekly at a local church and rings for Sunday service there each week, as well as ringing at other towers in the area and organising termly tours.

 

Choral Society - DUCS is Durham University's oldest musical society, having performed a wide range of large-scale choral works to a high standard for nearly seventy years.

 

Gospel Society - Durham University Gospel Society is an auditioned choir with the aim of celebrating and bringing gospel music to Durham, in a fun and lively setting.

 

Voices - Durham University Voices is a large, unauditioned choir which focuses on bringing singing to people with any level of experience. It undertakes a wide variety of repertoire and rehearsals are friendly and sociable.

 

Hill Orchestra - One of Durham's most relaxed, friendly and sociable orchestras, Hill Orchestra is a non-auditioning orchestra open to all Durham University students with regular concerts showcasing a variety of repertoire.
