 Masterclasses in Durham

Durham University Music Society puts on a comprehensive programme of masterclasses which are open to all members, in association with Experience Durham and University College. Our Masterclass series is an especially magnificent aspect of Music Durham, enabling students to have coaching from world class musicians throughout the year. We are proud to say that the University has appointed two new honorary fellows, Paul Spicer and Ralph Allwood who will be heavily involved in this and add to the excellence Durham demonstrates in choral music, which is a particular strength here. As well as this, the masterclass series looks to include a wide range of sessions, from orchestral conducting to jazz, as we hope to learn from some of the best!

Sir Thomas Allen - 6-9th February

Sir Thomas is widely admired in the opera world for his voice, the versatility of his repertoire, and his acting—leading many to regard him as one of the best lyric baritones of the late 20th century and in Durham we are extremely fortunate to have him as our supportive Chancellor. Such a talented, experience, professional and supportive opera singer!

Sir Tom will be coming to Durham for a singing masterclass on 6th February which is open to all members of the Music Society.

He will then be working exclusively with the Opera Ensemble cast on their production of the Marriage of Figaro for the entire weekend.

Richard Dickins

Richard Dickins, described by Julian Lloyd Webber writing in the London Daily Telegraph as ‘…an excellent conductor’, studied conducting with the late Norman Del Mar and subsequently working as Del Mar’s assistant on many occasions with orchestras such as the Philharmonia, Royal Philharmonic and Bournemouth Symphony. Since then he has built an enviable reputation working with orchestras throughout the UK including the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, London Mozart Players and Ulster Orchestra.

Richard's newly established relationship as 'conductor in Residence' has meant the Orchestral Society are priviledged to receive his coaching once every term. We look forward to his next visit in February!

Ralph Allwood - 5th February

Ralph Allwood MBE was, for 26 years, Director of Music at Eton College and is now a freelance conductor and Director of Music at the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich. He is the Director of the Eton Choral Courses and Conductor of the Rodolfus Choir, a founder and conductor of Inner Voices and an adjudicator of the Llangollen Eisteddfod.

Ralph has recently been made an Honorary Fellow of University College, Durham and we are very fortunate to have him visit and coach the chapel choirs and directors so regularly
